When we enter Junior High School (SMP) and High School (SMA), we are certainly no strangers to an organization called OSIS. That’s right, this Student Council is an organization that exists at the level of junior and senior high school education. Then, what exactly is meant by OSIS?

OSI meaning

OSIS stands for Intra-School Student Organization. OSIS is an organization that exists in schools in Indonesia which consists of students organized in a management structure. The purpose of the OSIS is to shape students’ leadership attitudes, increase students’ sense of responsibility towards school, and develop students’ potential as a whole. OSIS is also tasked with being a forum for students to actualize their ideas and ideas for the betterment of the school.

The history of OSIS dates back to the emergence of a student organization in the Netherlands in 1848. In Indonesia, student organizations first appeared in 1923 in Bandung, under the name “Indonesian Student Association” (PPI). PPI aims to fight for student rights and develop the potential of students in Indonesia. In 1949, PPI was changed to “Association of New Indonesian Students” (PPIB). PPIB aims to assist students in understanding and managing schools effectively, as well as assisting students in developing their social and leadership skills.

In 1964, PPIB was changed to “Intra-School Student Organization” (OSIS). OSIS aims to assist school management and develop the potential of students in Indonesia. OSIS also aims to improve communication between students and the school and community, as well as assist students in becoming responsible school citizens. Currently, OSIS is a student organization spread across all schools in Indonesia.
